What is inside

• 50 medical writing tasks. Each task gives the case notes, the writing task and the time allowed (5 minutes to read, 40 minutes to write), then a complete sample letter to compare with yours. Most are referral letters to a specialist, an emergency department or a mental health service; the rest are discharge letters to a GP and letters updating another doctor.
• Letter templates. Referral, discharge and transfer letters, with a choice of opening lines, where history and the plan belong, and the closing that OET markers expect.

The tasks are for the Medicine version of OET. Listening and Reading tests and Speaking role-plays are not in this pack.

How to use the tasks

1. Read the case notes for 5 minutes without writing, as in the test.
2. Write the letter in 40 minutes, with a body of about 180 to 200 words.
3. Compare it with the sample letter: what each kept, what each left out, and whether the purpose is clear in the first paragraph.

The templates help most in the first week. Once the structure is automatic, write from the case notes alone.

Does OET publish past papers?

No. OET writes new tests for each session and does not publish the old ones as past papers; its own preparation material is on oet.com. Students who search for OET past papers, previous question papers or recalls want practice tasks in the real format, which is what this pack gives for Writing.

Is it useful for nurses or other professions?

The tasks are written for doctors. The letter templates and the referral and discharge structure carry over to nursing letters, but the case notes are medical.

What score do I need?

Most regulators ask for 350 out of 500 (grade B) in Listening, Reading and Speaking. Several, including the UK NMC and ECFMG, accept 300 in Writing, while Ahpra in Australia now asks for 360 in Reading and Speaking.
